Now that we are getting a spell of good weather it is obviously time to look forward to dark nights and cold days. I must say that I think autumn is my favourite time of year, when days are days and nights are nights, but most of all the theatres are in full swing with their various productions. Here then is the first in a series of articles to be posted over the next couple of weeks, highlighting the delights in store.

The wonderful Leeds Grand Theatre is host to a selection of delights with stand-up comedy, sixties pop, a whodunnit, five musicals, three operas and a ballet. Leeds is definitely the place to be!

Let’s take them in the order above; 3rd September sees Tom Allen in his show Completely and then Russell Howard takes the stage on 5th November. The latter already has limited availability so don’t hang about.

Listen People. The Sixties Gold Tour on 29th October echoes the pop packages of the period with Herman’s Hermits headlining.

First up though, from 29th August – 2nd September, is the 70th Anniversary Tour of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap which is the world’s longest running theatre play. It’s a whodunnit, innit?

Five musicals – count them – five. A couple of them I know are making a return visit; Calendar Girls: The Musical from 7th – 11th November, and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie 14th – 19th November. I suspect that The King and I must have played at the Grand at some time since its Broadway premier in 1951 but I can’t say for certain. Regardless it is definitely here this year from 31st October – 4th November.

The final two musicals are both new ones; Greatest Days – The Official Take That Musical, 21st – 25th November, and I Should Be So Lucky: The Official Stock Aitken & Waterman Musical 12th December – 30th December. The latter is a World Premier so I will need to take my posh frock to the cleaners.

The operas, all from Opera North, are Falstaff, 28th September – 25th October, Masque of Might, 6th – 27th October and La rondine, 20th – 28th October. You will see that they seem to overlap but don’t worry, there won’t be three being sung simultaneously, they alternate nights.

Finally we come to the ballet. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Nutcracker and Northern Ballet are presenting this favourite from 29th November – 10th December.

So, something for every taste. For more details and bookings please go to https://leedsheritagetheatres.com/whats-on/?theatre=leeds-grand-theatre
